The Interdisciplinary Team – a full range of healthcare professionals working together to achieve the best possible treatment results for each individual patient.

When a family member’s chronic disease progresses to an advanced stage and adequate care can no longer be given at home, families turn to Runnymede for the specialized care and treatment required. Most patients who come through our doors are afflicted with serious illnesses such as Huntington disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS or the incapacitating results of a severe stroke. They have difficulty moving, speaking and even swallowing. Around the clock care and assistance from hospital staff is required in order to enable patients to perform these basic tasks.

At Runnymede every patient’s remaining abilities are maximized to the fullest potential. This is accomplished by the Interdisciplinary Team – a full range of healthcare professionals working together to achieve the best possible treatment results for each individual patient. Team members include physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, activity therapists, dietitians, social workers and pharmacists.

The first step to admission is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary assessment to determine how a new patient will benefit best from the variety of programs and services offered at Runnymede. It can take up to 85 hours to perform this assessment, but it is a critical stage to ensuring that Runnymede will be a nurturing home that provides individualized care and treatment aimed at enhancing health, mobility and quality of life.

Almost every patient admitted to Runnymede requires care from six to eight different key program areas. These complex care requirements are customized and integrated with other hospital services to design and create a course of therapy that is unique to the patient. This approach to total care maximizes the patient’s unique abilities, and promotes health, happiness and comfort.
