An Occupational Therapy assessment is completed with all patients admitted to Runnymede Healthcare Centre. Occupational Therapists (OT’s) assist patients maintain life roles and activities. OT’s will assess and will develop goals with the patient/substitute decision maker. The patient’s environment is assessed and often modified to improve safety and independence as their disease progresses. Treatment may include training of activities of daily living, and the prescription of adaptive equipment including wheelchairs. Proper seating is essential to promote comfort and maximize independence. The initial assessment and ongoing modifications are co-ordinated by the OT and can involve the other members of the multidisciplinary team. A seating clinic is held once a week as part of our seating program. If appropriate and criteria met, the OT will assist with the application for equipment funding through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) which can fund up to 75% of the equipment cost. ADP criteria guidelines may be obtained from the OT. Some examples of equipment include manual and power wheelchairs, specialized wheelchair cushions and walkers.
