Position Summary:

The Director, Support Services, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, will be responsible and accountable for the leadership and direction of all areas of the Hospital’s Facilities, Maintenance, Parking and Security services and Corporate Safety. This position will also direct and oversee the Hospital’s contracted services for Dietary, Housekeeping, Institutional Linen and Personal Laundry, and Diagnostic services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide sound leadership in the development, implementation and monitoring of systems and services, lead and direct managers and staff in the enhancement and performance of defined strategies and objectives and ensure the efficient, effective and safe use of resources and facilities.
  • Evaluates, approves or recommends proposed changes to policies with focus on providing, maintaining and seeking improvements to service and develops and assists with implementing departmental strategy, initiates, programs in line with requirements and best practices.
  • Coordinates departmental activities and responsibilities with other hospital departments and staff, representing department at administrative meetings, and serves as a point of contact to other departments and facilities as required.
  • Ensures the safety of staff through the coordination and implementation of appropriate education, training, documentation and compliance monitoring on all Hospital fire, safety and emergency codes.
  • Maintain, support, and oversee the emergency preparedness systems including written codes, supporting tools, the practice of mock code drills and develop emergency measurement plans for recovery decision making, continuity of critical departmental processes or temporary shut down of non critical departments to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Develop and revise policies and procedures in compliance with regulations; keeping facilities, power plants, and the building safe; acting as liaison to public utility, environmental, and energy agencies.
  • Conducts an annual assessment of facilities and develops an annual facilities project list to identify needed improvements and repairs.
  • Direct a preventive and corrective maintenance program to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operation of all related operating equipment within the facility and planning and coordinating repair, recommendation to replace and/or provide additions to equipment or physical structures as needed.
  • Develops an annual operating budget to include personnel, equipment, materials, and supply needs, monitoring budget after approval to ensure department operates within allocated funds, and developing remodeling budgets in concert with and for the approval of administrators.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications/experience:

  • Baccalaureate degree in a health related field required
  • Member in good standing with the a respective regulatory college
  • P. Eng or CET designation preferred
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Joint Health and Safety Certificate preferred
  • 5-7 years relevant leadership experience in clinical support services environment required.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Proven knowledge or experience with complex electrical, plumbing and mechanical maintenance, expansion and renovations and HVAC systems.
  • Expert problem-solving, dispute resolution and decision making skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills with the ability to influence staff at all levels.
  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office, database management, query tools and electronic staff scheduling.
